The History of Chesil Beach

Chesil Beach (also known as Chesil Bank) in Dorset, England is one of three major shingle beach structures in Britain. Its name is derived from the Old English word ‘closely’, meaning ‘gravel bank’. The beach is 18 miles long and stretches from Bridport to the Isle of Portland.

Chesil Beach initially formed from predominantly sandy deposits in Lyme Bay as water levels rose rapidly at the end of the last ice age 20,000–10,000 years ago. The coastline along Beach can be treacherous, a fact reflected in the local name ‘Deadman’s Bay. In November 1872, the Royal Adelaide, an iron ship carrying a cargo of coal and bound for Portland, was wrecked on each with the loss of all hands. Hardy used this event as the basis for his novel The Well-Beloved.
